In this whole new season of Raffles Runway, the show is back with 10 new designers. They are bold, fierce, and ready to give their all. Faced with emotional highs and lows, how will they prevail?
Each Wednesday morning from 8-11am, we congregate in a classroom to take lessons from instructors (including some who are well-known in the local fashion circle). In the first year, members will learn about the various stages in the conceptualisation of a garment, practising important skills such as pattern drafting and sewing in preparation for their senior project. Imagine SkillsFuture but more fun and artsy, especially since we are occasionally treated to an entertaining, eye-opening trip to fashion exhibitions, where we learn about the thriving fashion scene in Singapore and are inspired to create and trailblaze.
Through each session, we build not just our foundations in fashion, but our friendships as well. Be it the lending of a helping hand by a fellow member when your sewing needle breaks or commiserating over being unable to sew a perfectly straight line, it is unique, small moments like these that colour our journeys in Runway. In the second year, you will be given the opportunity to plan a fashion collection, right down to the designated theme, set and garment choice. Previous seasons have stunned and dazzled, and each generation has the chance to orchestrate their magnum opus, and reach new highs.
More importantly, outside of sessions, the designers actively engage in lively discussions. With conversations on topics ranging from the latest hits and flops at the Met Gala to critiquing (though usually gushing over) the outfits in the latest Barbie movie, it’s safe to say that fashion has become part and parcel of our designers’ lives. It is no surprise that you will sometimes find members on their fabric run to Chinatown, searching high and low for that perfect roll of fabric at the perfect price, while still juggling two unfinished projects.
Additionally, Runway is a space where everyone can find a place for themselves. We build CCA traditions through our bonds, be it the vice-like grip the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ has had on all generations or the creations of new habits we build with our friends.
We might not all be cut from the same cloth, but each designer is sure to find camaraderie and kinship in the safe haven of Runway. In Runway, you’ll find a plethora of unique styles and visions—some hardened with experience, others bustling with beginner’s enthusiasm, yet, each is bound by their undying passion for fashion. Even if we might disagree on the best look of the night, we still eagerly await conversing with our fellow designers.
